ENJOY HER LATEST WEEKLY COLOR NEWSPAPER COMIC STRIPS! AND ORDER HER COMIC BOOKS FROM OUR BACK ISSUE PAGE! Hi, everyone! I thought you might like an opportunity to meet my newest artist, SEAN HARRINGTON, who's been working on my weekly newspaper strip! So I managed to get a sit-down with him, and ask him a few questions. ![]() Q: Hi, Sean! It's a pleasure to get a chance to meet you! Let's start by asking you to tell us something about yourself and your background.A: I was born in Connecticut and after spending a few years in the bizarre Lewis Carroll-like realm known as Florida, I moved to Virginia which is where I now reside. Aside from my art career, I've also worked in advertising. Both involve working long hours and dealing with those modern-day pirates know as printers, but art is infinitely more enjoyable. Q: So how did you get into artwork? A: I've pretty much been drawing since I was old enough to hold one of those chubby kids crayons (although very little work from my Chubby Kids Crayon Period survives today). My brother and I both loved to draw and loved comic books so that's what we've been doing in some form or fashion since we were kids. Art and comics are the only careers I've ever seriously pursued (although I was pretty decent bowler as a teenager and my parents entertained the idea that I could be a professional if I got a little better. I didn't get any better.). Q: I like to bowl sometimes. Could you tell me how you got into doing your web-based comics? A: I finally got an internet connection in 2004 (I wanted it installed properly so I waited until Al Gore could come and do it personally) and I had started investigating print-on-demand comics, since the price of conventional printing was prohibitive for us at the time. As I came to find out, a majority of the P.O.D. comics were originally webcomics, so I started investigating webcomics, and it seemed like a good venue to get my work out where people could see it and I could build up a following. Q: I know you have an art studio. Could you tell me how that got started?A: Harrington Artwerkes started in 2004 and the idea was that it would be an art studio in the broadest sense. In addition to conventional art and comics, we make everything from jewelry to home decor, and we hope to eventually add music and movies and stage productions to our repetoire in the future. Q: I love your "Spying With Lana" comic. How was that created? A: A while ago, my brother and I decided to hone our writing skills by coming up with a complete concept and writing a short comic script about the concept all in a week. The concept I came up with was a spy satire (actually all my stories seem to turn into a satire sooner or later) featuring a hard-luck spy named Lana who could be just as great as James Bond if she could only stop getting stuck in trivial, screwed-up missions. And the rest, as they say, is continuity. Q: That is so great! What are your long-term plans and goals? A: Well, there's the one about driving in Formula 1 and winning two or three World Championships, but I assume you mean realistic plans. I'd like to continue to grow Spying with Lana and eventually add another comic or two. I'd also like to get into doing covers for comic companies, kinda like Adam Hughes or Tim Bradstreet (It would probably help if I drew as well as they do, of course). In addition to commercial work, I'd like to eventually do some painting on the side, sort of "grand scale" allegorical stuff like Alphonse Mucha's Slav Epic. Of course, considering that the Slav Epic is stuffed away in a dusty little unlit room in rural Czech Republic while Mucha's commercial work sells for millions, I don't intend to get carried away with it. ![]() Q: Is there anything else you think Flare fans should know about you? A: I've really enjoyed working on your adventures over the past year and having the opportunity to draw the characters from the Heroic Universe and make a (very) small contribution to that universe. Thanks to Dennis Mallonee and everyone at Heroic for the opportunity. Q: Thank you, Sean! I think everyone should check out "Spying With Lana" at www.harrington-artwerkes.com/Lana.htm. |
